Battlefield 4 might be getting better E-sports
support, after developer DICE mentioned that they are “very interested”
in E-sports. E-sports is a growing phenomenon in the world, with its own
tournaments and stars across the globe.
The
news comes from DICE general manager Karl-Magnus Troedsson, who said in
a recent intervew that E-sports is an area they are “very interested
in”. However, he added that he couldn’t give any specifics at this point
about E-sports functionality in Battlefield 4. Troedsson added that
multiplayer is the “heart” of Battlefield 4 and that DICE design
philosophy of focusing on multiplayer hasn’t changed with Battlefield 4.
Considering that the Battlefield games are some of the most popular
and competitive online games in the world, it seems like a great idea to
add proper E-sports functionality to the upcoming Battlefield 4.
While E-sports is gaining in popularity at the moment, the movement
is by no means new. It’s been around for over 15 years, and is
particularly popular in countries such as South Korea. Battlefield
competitor Call of Duty introduced new E-sport features with Black Ops 2
and Modern Warfare 3, where after the games gained in popularity in
game tournaments. Looks like DICE has something similar in mind for
Battlefield 4.
DICE had taken a lot of flack for the singleplayer
part of BF3, and they’re looking for fix that in Battlefield 4.
According to an interview with DICE’s Karl-Magnus Troedsson, the
singleplayer in BF3 was “too linear and too controlling of the player”.
Previously, DICE said that Battlefield is no longer a multiplayer-only series, and that singleplayer is an important part of the game now.
This time with Battlefield 4, Troedsson says that DICE is taking
“signature parts” of the multiplayer and bringing it into singleplayer.
They plan to bring some of the “multiplayer sandbox” gameplay into the
singleplayer, where the player can chose how to attack a certain
objective. DICE is putting all focus into multiplayer and singleplayer,
which is why there is no co-op in Battlefield 4.
However,
despite Troedsson’s promises, the 17-minute Battlefield 4 singleplayer
demo looked quite a bit scripted — some have even parodied the countless cut-scenes and quicktime events.
Despite the Battlefield series being known as for its deep
multiplayer, some players do appreciate the singleplayer part. Troedsson
said that singleplayer is a great introduction for the multiplayer
part, where controls and the weapons are the same. Which is a good idea
for beginners, as multiplayer is very competitive in Battlefield. As
Troedsson puts it “we prepare them for multiplayer”.
The Bad Company series did a lot better then it came to singleplayer,
as players simply got an objective and were tasked to find the solution
— they had a choice on how to attack, from what angle etc. In BF3, this
was a lot more linear and scripted in order to serve the “cinematic
story”, which took players out of the game. DICE is looking to add more
freedom to the Battlefield 4 singleplayer.

DICE and EA have yet to officially announce any special editions of the upcoming FPS blockbuster, Battlefield 4, but that isn’t stopping retailers from advertising them.
Only a few days ago, the Battlefield 4 deluxe edition made its first appearance on the website of UK retailer GAME.
Now, EB Games Australia is also promoting the Battlefield 4 Deluxe
Edition for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 for the price of $108.00, or for
the PC at $98.00. It also states that it will be available for purchase
on October 31, 2013 in Australia.
Like GAME’s listing before it, the advert lists off the contents of the Deluxe Edition, including the standard game, the China Rising expansion pack,
a steelbook case and bonus in-game content. In addition, it seems
ordering it from from EB Games will also net you a “bonus pair of real
dog tags.”
For those interested, the official description shines a little more
light on Battlefield 4′s single player campaign, revealing that it
“…starts with the evacuation of American VIPs from Shanghai and follows
your squad’s struggle to find its way home.”
A description of the game’s multiplayer makes mention of
“Levolution,” the name that DICE is undoubtedly giving Battlefield 4′s
level of destruction that will be featured in-game.
“Only in Battlefield can you demolish the buildings shielding your
enemy. Only in Battlefield will you lead an assault from the back of a
gun boat. Battlefield grants you the freedom to do more and be more
while playing to your strengths and carving your own path to victory.
Only in Battlefield can you experience Levolution, changing the
landscape in real-time with interactive environments that react to your
every move.
Only in Battlefield will you find the awe-inspiring power of the
next generation Frostbite 3 engine, whose unrivaled audio and visual
fidelity make your game more dramatic, more believable, and more human.
Only in Battlefield can you experience an unmatched level of all-out
war that grants you the freedom to play to your strengths and carve
your own path to victory.
Only in Battlefield do you have the power to dominate land, air and sea with all-new, intense water-based vehicle combat.”

Earlier today, EA announced that Battlefield 4 will be coming
to the PC, PS4, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. And now we’ve got the
official release date: October 29, 2013. Battlefield 4 will be released
on all platforms simultaneously, making it likely the biggest release in
the franchise to date.
Furthermore, developer DICE has revealed that Battlefield 4 multiplayer
will be showcased at E3 on June 10. No word on what the multiplayer
showing will feature, but we really hope it includes some form of
Commander mode.
One thing we’re certain: we’ll be seeing Battlefield 4 on the PS4 and
Xbox One at E3. Hopefully multiplayer on next gen consoles will be
bumped up to 64 players. One of the new features of the Xbox One is that
the new Xbox Live cloud can power some aspects of multiplayer,
increasing the player size in games.
EA has revealed a ton of Battlefield 4 news today. Not only did we finally get an official Battlefield 4 release date, it was also confirmed that the game is coming to next gen system as well.
But EA and DICE aren’t done, apparently. They also revealed a brand new Battlefield 4 DLC,
called “China Rising”. The new downloadable content will be offered for
free to those who pre-order the game, which begs the question: what
happened to Drone Strike, the original DLC that was offered to those who pre-ordered?
Anyways, Battlefield 4 China Rising
will feature 4 new maps, new vehicles, and as the promo image puts it,
“high tech gear”. We imagine it’ll include a bunch of new dog tags,
awards, assignments, weapon skins, and other goodies.
The China Rising DLC will also be offered free of charge to Battlefield 4 Premium
members. Otherwise, it will likely retail at $15, just as the previous
DLC in the series. Looks like we just got another great reason to pre
order the game.
DICE has revealed the official box art of the DLC, and some screenshots as well, which you can find below:
A new Battlefield 4 pre-order poster from EB Games, found directly on their site (link), hints at several new Battlefield 4 features, including improved destruction.

Also mentioned is the new Frostbite 3 game engine that powers
Battlefield 4, and finally, there’s a mention of “intense water-based
vehicle combat”.
The EB Games pre-order is valid for Australia, and includes the new Battlefield 4 China Rising
DLC, a Steelbook case for the game, a pair of real Dog Tags, and some
additional bonus in-game content. Check out the pre-order posted below
